2014 senior football players look back, share future plans
The 2014 Tyrone Golden Eagles football season was a memorable and successful one. The boys brought home the 10th district championship in school history, setting a record for most district titles in District Six. For many seniors, this was their final year of organized football, but a few plan to play at the next level. We asked some seniors what their favorite game was, favorite coach, future plans, and message to underclassman. Here’s what they said:
Garrett Hunter #8
Favorite game: Chestnut Ridge game because we all played well and I had a lot of fun beating a good team on their home field.
Favorite coach: I have none.
Future plans: Attend West Virginia University Honors College for Biomedical Engineering.
Message to underclassman: Be a quarterback so you don’t have to do anything at practice!
Silas Crawford #7
Favorite game: Central Mountain game because it was senior night, and I had three touchdowns.
Favorite coach: All of them.
Future plans: Play college football not sure where at yet.
Message to underclassman: Keep on keeping on baby!
Duane Boone #3
Favorite game: Forest Hills game because that was the best challenge we faced.
Favorite coach: All of them.
Future plans: Play college football.
Message to underclassman: Never give up.
Joe Steinbugl #30
Favorite game: Huntingdon playoff game because of the locker room after the game.
Favorite Coach: Coach Elvey.
Future Plans: Attend IUP.
Message to Underclassman: Don’t eat the yellow snow. But seriously, enjoy every second of playing here!
Noah Tepsic #31
Favorite game: Mount Union game because we came in as underdogs, projected to lose. We played the best game of the year, bringing home the D6 title.
Favorite coach: I like all of them equally.
Future plans: Attend Saint Francis University for physical therapy. Maybe play college football or track.
Message to underclassman: Always give 100% in whatever task. Never doubt yourself.
Nick Getz #13
Favorite game: Huntingdon playoff game because it was the first time the senior class won the district semi-final and made the championship; also because we beat Huntingdon by a lot.
Favorite coach: Coach Wilson
Future plans: Go to college for Business Administration.
Message to underclassman: Have fun and enjoy it while it lasts.
Bry Taylor #21:
Favorite game: Bellwood game because we let them get ahead by 14 and think that they were going to win when we knew the whole time we would be victorious. Or the Central game because we picked off a D1 quarterback three times.
Favorite coach: Coach McNelis because he would only share his sunflower seeds with me at practice.
Future plans: Attend college, be successful.
Message to underclassman: Word hard, build a brotherhood with your teammates, and most importantly, beat Bellwood!
Andrew Bartos #52
Favorite game: Backyard Brawl because it came down to the last seconds of the game. Of course we won.
Favorite coach: Coach Latchford
Future plans: Attend PSU for Environmental Engineering
Message to underclassman: Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.
Andrew Hockenberry #62
Favorite game: Mount Union because they came into the game thinking they would kill us, but we won.
Favorite coach: Coach Gummo
Future plans: Go to college for sports administration.
Message to underclassman: Work hard, live in the moment, and enjoy the little things.
Cody Cassler #63:
Favorite game: Central Mountain game because it was senior night and I finally got to dress for the game after being out six weeks with an injury.
Favorite coach: Coach Scott Gummo
Future plans: Go to college.
Message to underclassman: Keep working hard, and don’t give up.
Mark Lewis #54
Favorite game: Chestnut Ridge game because it was one of our best games as a team, and it was truly a turning point for the offensive line. We decided to don a “take no prisoners” attitude, and it showed. Also, that game marked the return of the myth that is Eli Sleeth.
Favorite coach: Coach Jeff Lechner because he is so much like me, even if we did drive each other nuts. But I also loved being around Latchford, Elvey, McNelis, Gummo, and Wilson. All of them are great guys and excellent role models.
Future plans: Earn a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford.
Message to underclassman: Become a quarterback now so that you never have to work hard at practice again.
Jake Makdad #5
Favorite game: Monopoly. But my favorite football game was the Central game because we picked off a D1 QB 3 times and I believed they guaranteed a win.
Favorite coach: It’s hard to answer with anyone specific, I think they’re all fine gentleman. I suppose our fearless, vocal leader Coach Wilson is a step above the rest.
Future plans: Attend West Virginia University aspiring to be an astrophysicist or aerospace engineer.
Message to underclassman: Don’t be shy, go to every function you can, never waste a day, be kind to your mothers, and run more than you lift but lift every other day. Don’t try to fit anyone’s image of who you should be, be you.
Ty Snyder #9
Favorite game: Mount Union because we won districts and whooped up on them.
Favorite coach: Coach Latchford.
Future plans: Go to college and pursue a job in HVAC.
Message to underclassman: Always chase your dreams.
Eli Sleeth #33
Favorite game: Mount Union game because we won the district title.
Favorite coach: Coach Wilson
Future plans: Play college football.
Message to underclassman: lift, and work hard.
Cameron Bakhsheshe #6
Favorite game: Bellwood game because it was hype.
Favorite coach: Coach Wilson
Future plans: Attend college, not yet decided where.
Message to underclassman: Give 110% in everything you do.
Aleic Hunter #32
Favorite game: Mount Union game because we came in as the underdogs, and we proved all the haters wrong.
Favorite coach: All of them.
Future plans: Play college football, not decided where yet.
Message to underclassman: Enjoy every second of Tyrone football because it goes by fast.
