Top Ten Greatest Films of All Time: #5
Star Wars defined a generation and has the greatest cult following of all time. A masterpiece of not only science fiction but also of cinema itself allows George Lucas’ brain child to crack the Top Five.
Defeated by Annie Hall at the 1978 Academy Awards for Best Picture (an absolute travesty by the way), Star Wars captured six Oscars for its musical score, editing, set design, visual effects, costume design and sound editing. Lucas’ screenplay also went unrecognized along with the performance of legendary actor Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
What sets Star Wars apart is the story. It has UNDENIABLY the best original tale ever written specifically for the screen. The “Space Opera” has captivated two generations of movie goers with seven films, the most recent being The Force Awakens (which I highly recommend!)
It was a hard decision between the the original Star Wars (a.k.a entry #4, A New Hope) and perhaps the greatest sequel of all time The Empire Strikes Back. Both were worthy of making this list, but the story of the first film edges out the much darker second installment. But not by much.
Harrison Ford as Han Solo is possibly my favorite film character ever. His evolution from rogue outsider to hero of the republic is an impressive story arc that any movie goer can root for. His friendship with a seven foot tall wookie named Chewbacca is also strangely touching.
Droids R2D2 and C3PO rival Chewy and Han’s relationship as the best duo in the film. Their banter and comic relief throughout the series often overshadows their importance and driving nature for the story.
How many film characters are as iconic as Darth Vader? The Skywalker Family in general has become one of cinema’s leading entities. But beyond the immense popularity of the franchise and this film in particular there’s something more: an all time great movie.
Star Wars is lauded for it’s groundbreaking special effects and impressive set and art direction. I couldn’t agree more, but the performances and story never get enough credit. Star Wars is not just a sci-fi masterpiece that only nerds enjoy. Luke Skywalker’s story is as old as time, but it works. Sometimes you need to tell a story in a galaxy far far away for it to properly resonate.
Now, some of the acting and effects are now considered corny by today’s standards. These aspects “date” the movie and keep it from rising any higher. But these minute flaws don’t show up enough to harm this nearly perfect movie. So watch on, and may the force be with you!
