Middle School Teachers of the Month: Anne Maddox & Jenna Wray

EE: What was your funniest or most interesting moment as being a teacher so far?

AM: I was SO sick my first year as a teacher. I ended up getting the flu and was just terrified to call in sick. I stuck it out and pretty much lived on cough drops. I got these really nasty, hardcore blue kind that basically just numb your throat. A very kind student in my 7th period, the last class of the day, kindly pointed out to me that I had a cough drop, stuck to the back of my pants. Where it had definitely been all day. Sheesh.

EE: What was one memorable moment you have had as a teacher?

AM: In our 8th grade Awards Assembly, I get to give the “Rising Star” award to the student who has shown the most growth throughout the year. I had the honor to give it, on my very first year, to a student who had worked their tail off all year in English. I was incredibly proud of him!

EE: Where did you go to college? What degrees do you hold?

AM: Penn State! I hold a BA in English and a Masters of Curriculum and Instruction.

EE: What is your favorite food?

AM: Just one? I would have to say cheese steaks followed by ice cream!

EE: What would you be doing if you were not teaching?

AM: Reading! Wait, as a job? Oh…. there was a time when I wanted to be an editor (English major, remember?) I might be doing. But I don’t think it would be as fun.

EE: What was your funniest or most interesting moment as a teacher?

JW: My funniest moment as a teacher is difficult to choose. I have a great time in my classroom and interacting with students in the hallways on a daily basis. If I had to choose my funniest moment I would say it was my first time as a target at the Pitch Burst machine during last year’s SOAR Carnival. It is always fun to show the kids your silly side.

EE: What was your most memorable moment as a teacher?

JW: Any time a student has an “AH HA” moment stands out in my mind. Watching students “get it” is truly an amazing thing to watch. I also fondly think of meaningful letters I have received from students letting me know how how I have positively impacted their lives.

EE: Where did you go to college? What degrees do you hold?

JW: I originally went to school at Lock Haven University and hold a degree in Health Science (I had planned on becoming a Physician’s Assistant). I decided later on to return to school at Drexel University to follow my path to become a teacher. It was at Drexel that I earned a degree in Elementary Education and my K-6 teaching certification.

EE: What is your favorite/indulgent food?

JW: If I HAD to choose just one food it would have to be ice cream. Cappuccino Chocolate Chunk from The Meadows is the best! It is just so delicious!

EE: What would you be doing if you weren’t teaching?

JW: If I was not teaching I would most likely be working in health care as a nurse or PA. I feel that helping people is part of who I am. At the end of the day I just want to have a positive impact on those around me.
