Freezin’ for a Reason: YAN and HOSA Take the Plunge for a Special Cause

Mother nature has been mostly kind this winter, with temperatures well above normal for much of the new year.  But not on February 4th when students from the Tyrone High School YAN and HOSA clubs plunged into the icy waters of Canoe Creek Lake for a good cause.

With the temperature was hovering in the teens, it took some courage to take the plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics.

“It was extremely cold at first, but after you were in for a while you kind of went numb,” said Tyrone senior Riean Minnich. “The worst part was getting out of the water and having the wind hit you.”

Joining Minnich in the icy waters were seniors Abbey Hagan, Daniel Lay, Alexis Condrack and juniors Dylan Thomas, Tori Crabtree, Elina Lure, and Andrew Lang.

I think it turned out well considering the short notice of the fundraiser. The students decided to plunge about two weeks before the event.

Together YAN and HOSA raised $415 for the Special Olympics. HOSA brought in the most with $289.  The average YAN “plunger” brought in $42, while the average HOSA participant raised $64.

“It was really nice to help out for a new cause,” said senior YAN member Alexis Condrack.

At the polar plunge, there were students from other schools, and other people who just wanted to help out, including HOSA adviser and TAHS teacher Christie Taylor.

Taylor was there to take pictures and provide moral support, but not to get wet. At least this year.

“I was taking pictures for yearbook and HOSA.  Also, I am generally a cold person who doesn’t really enjoy winter.  Being outside in 19 degree weather for a few hours is not something I would normally do,” said Taylor.

There were a total of eight waves and over 400 people taking the plunge, and most of the HOSA and YAN members waited until the sixth wave to go into the water. Some students were doing jumping jacks and running in place to warm themselves up before going into the water.

It was a great experience and it was fun to help out for a good cause.

There was also a pre-plunge party with food, drinks, entertainment, and fortunately, a warm fire on the beach.

Both clubs plan to do the plunge again next year. They also hope to convince a few more Tyrone High School clubs and organizations to join the cause.
