Varsity jackets make a comeback at TAHS

Although varsity jackets have not really existed in the halls of Tyrone Area High School for a long while, they may be once again seen roaming the halls.

Back when many of the parents of current students at Tyrone High went to school, varsity jackets were a common thing to wear if you had lettered in a sport.

However, while other schools continued to wear varsity jackets, the jackets almost went extinct at Tyrone. Why this happened, no one is really sure. Last year, no faculty member even volunteered to be in charge of varsity jacket ordering so there was never even an opportunity for student athletes to purchase a jacket.

This year was a different story.

Mrs. Harris, a music teacher at Tyrone High, decided that she would take the responsibility of heading up the varsity jacket ordering and fitting. Thirteen varsity jackets were ordered from the company, Standard Pennant.

“They’re very nice,” said senior James Oliver, “I really like how the names are stitched into the jackets to personalize them.”

I myself purchased a jacket and really like them. On top of the jackets being nice and warm, I think it is nice that student athletes in the school now have an opportunity to show what they have accomplished and worked hard for during their high school sports career.

Perhaps this year will mark the beginning of a new age– an age during which varsity jackets once again are seen throughout the halls of Tyrone’s historic high school. Just like it did in the past.
