Tyrone Elementary School collects 290 pairs of pajamas for the Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive

Many students, staff members, and community residents donated pajamas to give children in need a warm and cozy bedtime.

Students brought their pairs of pajamas to school each morning to donate for the Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive.

The Tyrone Area Elementary School students and staff spread some holiday cheer this December by collecting 290 pairs of brand-new pajamas for needy children, far surpassing their goal of 200. For the second consecutive year, TAES joined with Scholastic and the Pajama Program.

For each pair of pj’s donated, Scholastic donated a new book to give children a warm and cozy bedtime in 2016.

The collection drive occurred from December 7-11, 2015.

“We were extremely surprised at how quickly we met and exceeded our goal.  It was wonderful to see the students get so excited when they walked in each morning with their donations,” said Sara Jackson, Reading Specialist at Tyrone Area Elementary School.

According to Jackson, the donations came in steadily throughout the week with 56 pairs on Monday, 59 pairs on Tuesday, 34 pairs on Wednesday, 46 pairs on Thursday, 69 on Friday, 20 pairs the following Monday and 6 extra pairs were collected that Tuesday.  Most of the donations came from the elementary school, but a few came from the middle and high school as well.

“It was so awesome. It was exciting that we collected that many pajamas,” said Paige, grade 3.

Each student that donated to the cause received a certificate recognizing them for their service and donation at the literacy partnership event on Monday, December 21.  The students were also treated with a “read-aloud” assembly and got to pick a book of their own to add to their personal collection.
