The Tyrone Boys soccer team kept its district championship dreams alive with a 2-1 playoff win over Juniata on Tuesday, October 29th at Tiger Stadium in Hollidaysburg.

It didn’t take long to get the scoring started as Zach Friday netted his first of two goals just one minute and thirty-eight seconds into the game. The goal came on an assist from Bobby Dawson on a corner kick.

“The ball just popped loose and I was there to put it in,” Friday told the Altoona Mirror after the game.

Tyrone (14-4-1) was able to keep up with the speedy Juniata (10-8-1) players the entire game. Their only mistake came when Juniata sophomore Brand Brackbill scored on an unassisted goal with 24:23 left in the first half.

The game remained tied until Zach Friday scored his second goal of the night on an assist from Bellwood sophomore Noah D’Angelo. D’Angelo crossed the ball in from the right sideline and Friday got a head on the ball and put it into the back corner of the net.

“I scored on numerous headers during the season,” Friday told the Mirror, “I just went up for it and did what I could.”

The score stayed 2-1 for the rest of the game as Tyrone constantly fought off many offensive attacks from Juniata. Keeper Dominic Berry had an outstanding game, stopping 10 of 11 shots on goal including a second half shutout for the Golden Eagles.

When the final whistle blew the whole team and its fans burst into cheers as Tyrone made history, advancing to the District 6 championship game for the first time in program history.

“We had very few scoring chances tonight but when we got a couple our execution on offense was good,” second year head coach Nick Miller told the Mirror.

“We have our first shot at winning districts and we’ve never been in this position before. We’ve worked real hard to get here. This is a dream come true,” added Miller.

Tyrone will play Philipsburg Osceola in the championship game on Thursday, October 31st at 6:00 pm at Tiger Stadium in Hollidaysburg.
