Due to the state budget crisis and the upcoming holiday season the Tyrone Food Bank has an urgent need for donations this week. To help alleviate the shortage, the Tyrone High School Social Studies Department is sponsoring a food drive from November 9th through November 13th.

All students and staff are encouraged to bring donations to their social studies classes this week.

The items will be sorted and boxed by students in the Alternative Education Program and delivered to the Food Bank on Friday afternoon by the TASD custodial staff.

The class that collects the most items will win a pizza party courtesy of the YAN Club.

The Food Bank will accept any non-perishable food items, but the following items are in short supply:

  • Chicken noodle soup
  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • Tomato, vegetable & other canned soup
  • Canned pasta (ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna)
  • Canned beef stew
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly
  • Noodles
  • Macaroni & cheese
  • Hamburger Helper
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Spaghetti
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Tuna
  • Canned chicken
  • Canned fruit
  • Baked beans
  • Canned vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, beans, peas, green beans, corn)
  • Canned pumpkin
  • Cake mixes
  • Brownie mixes
  • Toilet paper

The Tyrone Food Bank is located at Wesley Methodist Church on Logan Avenue in Tyrone.  The Food Bank has been helping residents of Tyrone for almost thirty years.  Because much of their funding comes from the state government, the state budget crisis has seriously affected the Food Bank.

This food drive will replace the social studies department’s usual November charity event, Operation SOS.

Operation SOS is a county wide donation drive for members of our armed forces deployed overseas.  The entire program is taking a one year hiatus, so the social studies department was looking for a new project to replace this long time local charity. When the teachers heard about a local need at the Tyrone Food Bank, they quickly decided to put together a food drive.

“We realize that it’s a short notice fundraiser, but with the state not sending the food bank any funds we know there is a big need right now,” said TAHS social studies teacher Todd Cammarata.
