Six new student teachers are taking their first steps into the teaching profession this fall at the Tyrone Area High School.

They come from a variety of different colleges, but most are from Penn State. Laura Scheeler, World Cultures student teacher in Mrs. Redinger’s class says “There is a lot to do [at Penn State], and you get to meet new people from all over the world.”  She is excited to be at a school like Tyrone because they want to learn how to become a teacher and help students learn.

Students enjoy having them here too. “I like [experiencing] new techniques from student teachers, and I like having them here because it lets them use their skills from college,” says ninth grader, Shaniah Lowery.

Our student teachers seem to like Tyrone very much. “I like the small community, you are all very friendly, ” said Scheeler.

“I like the school spirit!” said Miss Mariani, student teacher in Mrs. Beigle’s senior English class.

Mr. Testa, student teacher for Mr. Cammarata’s US civics class, wants his students to walk into his class as boys and girls, and walk out as men and woman. He wants them to become better individuals with a better understanding of the material.

“I want them to reach out and learn what they want to learn,” says Testa. Some students find school boring, but Testa wants them to be able to really like what they’re doing and be interested in what he’s teaching.

Miss Mariani says “A lot of people see a subject and think it’s automatically boring, you never know what you’re going to get out of it.” She also said, “Give everything a chance; don’t judge a book by its cover.”

These student teachers are here to help.  They all want you to enjoy what you’re learning and get you prepared for college. They want you to do well in school and really dig in to what you’re doing in each class. They are here to give you advice and they want you to take it. Talk to them, listen to them, and learn something new everyday!
