The Smithsonian in Washington D.C has twenty museums, galleries, and a zoo that are all free. Each one of the museums and galleries have a unique building structure to represent the museum or gallery name. Also, each of the museums or galleries are relatively close to each other in D.C.
Museums/Galleries:
African American Museum
The African American Museum includes collections on slavery, music, clothing, civil rights, etc. The museum also includes items from the 1850s to 1970s
National Museum of African Art
The National Museum of African Art is the only national museum in the United States that is dedicated to the collection, exhibition, conservation, and study of the arts of Africa.
National Air and Space Art
The National Air and Space Art includes topics from Space Shuttles to the Wright brothers.
American Art Museum
The American Art Museum includes works from the colonial era to the present.
American History Museum
The American History Museum includes more than 3 million artifacts, and it focuses on the United States history which is including roots and connections to other cultures.
American Indian Museum
The American Indian Museum includes one of the world’s largest and diverse collections, and it gives visitors from around the world a sense of Native America.
Anacostia Community Museum
The Anacostia Community Museum includes artifacts, works of art, photographs, documents and paper records, audiovisual media, and other materials that help you understand how the community works.
Archives of American Art
The Archives of American Art includes exhibitions, articles, and books that preserve American Art that might have been lost without the museum.
Art and Industries Building
The Art and Industries Building was one of the first of the nation’s museums to be open, and it includes special events and several activities.
Freer Gallery of Art
The Freer Gallery of Art includes collections of Asian art and works by James McNeill Whistler.
Hirshhorn
The Hirshhorn includes artist work pieces from Magdalena Abakanowicz to Shelia Zuncer.
Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum includes one of the largest science learning venues and is for all ages.
Portrait Gallery
The Portrait Gallery includes stories of American leaders, rebels, etc.
Postal Museum
The Postal Museum includes postal history from colonial times to present.
Smithsonian Castle
The Smithsonian Castle was built in 1885 and has the Smithsonian Visitor Center in it.
