Tyrone seniors James Oliver and Terel Albright were recently honored by the Blair County Chapter of the NAACP at their annual Freedom Fund dinner at the Calvin House in Duncansville on Saturday May 3, 2014.

James Oliver received the Blair Country Martin Luther King scholarship and the 2013-2014 Blair County NAACP Football Player of the Year Award.  The MLK Scholarship is sponsored by McDonalds, JC Penney and Guy Landolfi.

“It was very unexpected, and I was very surprised to get these awards,” said Oliver.

“The committee chose James Oliver for the football award because of his outstanding performance,” said Blair County NAACP Chairman Don Witherspoon,  “He was chosen for the MLK scholarship because we thought he represents the things that MLK wanted all students to achieve.”

“Terel Albright was chosen for the Julian Bond scholarship because Mr. Bond is a man who has fought  for human rights and equality and Terel is someone who represents the true meaning of diversity,” said Witherspoon.  The Julian Bond Scholarship is sponsored by US Foods and DiAndrea Media.

“I wasn’t expecting it at all, I really wasn’t even going to apply until they told me too,” said Albright.

Following graduation, Albright plans to attend Lock Haven University to major in criminal justice.

Oliver will attend St. Francis University in the fall.  He will play for the Red Flash football team and has yet to decide on a major.

“The Blair County NAACP believes in recognizing the academic achievements of all students in Blair County,” said Witherspoon,  “We hope the students of the Tyrone Area School District continue to apply for our scholarships in the future.”
