A community 5k run/2k walk, followed by a pancake breakfast, will be held at Reservoir Park in Tyrone on Saturday, May 16, 2020, in honor of the late Adam Zook.
Proceeds from the race will fund scholarships and support local suicide prevention initiatives within the Tyrone Area High School and surrounding community.
Adam was a valued, well-respected student and member of the Tyrone community and a graduate of the Tyrone High School Class of 2016, where he excelled academically, athletically, and socially. Adam was very involved with the student body as the Editor-in-Chief of the Eagle Eye, a member of the mock trial team, track team, cross-country team, drama club, and numerous other clubs and organizations at Tyrone High School.
After graduation, Adam enrolled in Slippery Rock University to pursue his passion for journalism. Just like in high school, Adam was chosen to be editor in chief of the Slippery Rock student newspaper for his senior year. However, in July 2019, the summer before his senior year, Adam tragically took his own life.
The entire Tyrone school and community were in shock and deep mourning after his passing. Although everyone did not know him personally, most knew of him as a kind, outgoing, genuine person. One thing he was known for was standing at corners of the school hallways and greeting and complimenting anyone who passed by.
Adam will always be remembered for his vibrant spirit and compassionate nature. He lived by his personal motto, “Be kind to others, you never know when they may need that hello.”
In his memory, proceeds from the race will be used toward a scholarship fund invested with the Central Pennsylvania Community Foundation. Race organizers plan to establish several scholarships will be awarded each year to outstanding student leaders and athletes in the Tyrone Area School District.
