Music Review: Pentatonix

Taking A Capella Music By Storm…

A Capella music is on the rise thanks to the TV show “The Sing-Off” and movies like Pitch Perfect. And there is one band that can thank “The Sing-Off” for their immense success.

Pentatonix.

Made up of only 5 singers, Pentatonix is the best a capella group I have heard. With 4 males and 1 female this group won the 3rd season season of “The Sing-Off” on NBC in 2011. They do mostly covers but have some original songs. They released their first album PTX Vol. 1 and their Christmas album PTXmas shortly after finishing the show. Both albums debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 and have sold more than 125,000 copies. Their newest album was just released November 5th.

My favorite song by the group is the song Little Drummer Boy. It is so simple and pure, and it just gets you ready for the Christmas season.

Now, seeing as the Christmas season is over, Pentatonix has an amazing version of the popular song ” I Need Your Love” by Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding. It has a sick electronica feel, provided by the amazing beatboxer  Kevin Olusola. The song starts with one of the three lead vocalist Mitch  Grassi killing the lead vocals of Ellie Goulding. It then evolves into the whole group. There are multiple breakdowns in this song, all of them led by Kevin. Then in a sort of reggae feel Scott Hoying takes the lead vocals, with support from Mitch and the only female of the group Kirstie Maldonado. The song finishes with Avi Kaplan the group’s bass showing off his range.

I totally recommend checking them out. They are currently on tour in Europe and start their USA tour in Tulsa, Oklahoma on February 5th.
