The Lady Eagles soccer team triumphed over Penns Valley in a 6-2 victory in a well-fought, high-energy game. Everything seemed to be clicking for the Lady Eagles, leaving the team with a glimpse of what they have to offer this season.
“We played great. We definitely needed that game after a tough loss [to Hollidaysburg],” said junior Chloe LaRosa, who scored four of the Lady Eagles’ six goals.
Tyrone came into the game knowing they would need to prove themselves after a difficult loss to a well-skilled Hollidaysburg team and going against another team known for skilled players who are always on their toes.
The game began with the ball stuck in the midfield, but two minutes in the Lady Rams saw an opportunity and scored the game’s first goal on Tyrone’s flat defensive line.
Four minutes later, Tyrone tied the game on a play that began with a throw in from sophomore Becca Lewis to junior Chloe LaRosa, who let the ball slide across her body and one-touch it into the bottom right corner of the net.
Within the twenty-eight minute of the game, senior Sophia Nelson was able to intersect one of the passes between the opposing team and dribble the ball straight to the goal. She scored Tyrone’s second goal of the half when the ball curved into the right corner of the net.
Less than ten minutes later, LaRosa scored two more goals after a pass from sophomore Annie Bardell landed in front of the goal for her to have a direct shot on goal. Penns Valley keeper went down for the ball, but it slipped out of her hands. LaRosa was able to sneak the ball around her and score into an empty net. One minute later, freshman Adriene Maloney crossed the ball from the right side of the field for LaRosa to shoot into the bottom right corner of the net.
The first half ended with a 4-1 Tyrone lead with Tyrone holding possession of the ball for the majority of the half. The team jogged to the sideline knowing they had the ability and skills to score more goals and top the Lady Rams if they continued to keep up their intensity.
The second half of the game started out with Tyrone dominating possession of the ball and connecting several passes throughout the field. LaRosa was able to break past the Lady Rams defensive line when Maloney crossed the ball. She then shot on goal and scored in the back of the net.
Tyrone’s final goal was scored by senior Lindsey Parks when LaRosa dropped the ball back to Parks, and she took the opportunity to shoot.
The last goal of the game was scored by Penns Valley five minutes after Parks scored. A Penns Valley player was able to kick the ball between Tyrone’s defensive line, and Falls took the opportunity to head straight for goal.
Winning 6-2 in the game against Penns Valley was exciting for the team because it was their first time winning against Penns Valley. In previous seasons, they suffered many losses by one or two goals.
“That game definitely boosted our confidence and I believe will help us in future games. Everyone connected really well and it actually looked like we were having fun,” said LaRosa.
Tyrone’s game showed how the Lady Eagles could work together and score big, even when the team is not at full strength. The team still had players out due to COVID exposure, but they did not let that affect their mindset going into the game.
