Despite Rain, Tyrone Hosts Successful Band Competition

Drum Majors Ethan White and Rebekah Schleppy

Seven marching bands played for an enthusiastic audience on Saturday, October 1 at Tyrone High School’s annual Music In The Valley marching band competition.

According to Tyrone Marching Band Director David Hock, the show was a great success.

“Despite having to move indoors, the show went smoothly and I think all the bands still had a worthwhile experience and received some good feedback from judges,” said Tyrone Band Director David Hock, “Our performance was pretty good, but it’s difficult to get a good read on the show indoors when we’ve been practicing for outdoor acoustics.”

Six of the seven performing bands competed for trophies. Tyrone performed in exhibition. A normal field show exhibition means that the band is judged and receives a TOB score, but does not receive a placement or trophy for that event. In a normal outside performance, the score absolutely still counts in the overall TOB rankings, even though it’s an exhibition. However, in this case, because the show was held inside and the bands were only judged musically, not visually, all scores were considered incomplete and do not count towards the overall rankings. The score that is listed in the rankings in this article is the score that we received from our St. Marys competition on September 17 and the ranking is based off of that. Assuming we are not rained out this Saturday, whatever score we receive this Saturday will then update the rankings.

However, in this case, because the show was held inside and the bands were only judged musically, not visually, all scores were considered incomplete and do not count towards the overall rankings.

To Hock, the most important thing for his band is to grow and improve each and every time they perform.

The band’s current place in the Tournament Of Bands ranking is 11th place out of 33 different schools from the Atlantic coast .The score listed in the rankings below is from the St. Mary’s competition on September 17.
