Tyrone volleyball makes history; sweeps Huntingdon 3-0

Tyrone defeated Huntingdon for the first time in school history

For years Huntingdon has set the standard for girls volleyball in the region.  The Lady Bearcats have won PIAA state championships and have defeated the Tyrone Lady Eagles every single time the two schools have met.  But for the first time in history, Tyrone defeated the Huntingdon Bearcats in a 3-0 set match on Tuesday October 13th.

Tyrone won in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, and 25-20.

The girls were enthusiastic and energetic from the get go. They played with heart, I’m proud of them

— Head Coach Mike Kraft

“I will say it feels good to get a solid win,” said Tyrone head coach Michael Kraft.

Tyrone was coming off of two tough losses, losing to Bellefonte and Penns Valley last week and Coach Kraft knew his team needed to pick up their attitude going into the match with Huntingdon.  Kraft sat his team down in his classroom and showed a short motivational video clip called “passion beats logic.”

“Logic said we were the underdogs,” said Kraft, “and that we would never beat Huntingdon, but passion won. The girls were enthusiastic and energetic from the get go. They played with heart, I’m proud of them.”

Sophomore Lea Crofcheck had 14 assists and one block, and junior Alexis Cannistraci had five kills and one block.

“As a team we didn’t get a lot of kills, but we knew how to put the ball away and they couldn’t dig us,” said Cannistraci.

“I think as a team we went into the gym with our heads held high, that gym is our house and we weren’t letting Huntingdon run the place,” said Shaniah Lowery.

“We know coming into most games we are not the favorite. Most times we are the underdogs,” said Kraft.

“Huntingdon came thinking they were going to wreck us, but we showed them what we’re made of. We played with passion in our hearts,” said Anslee Walk, who had 16 digs last night.

“Business is not complete as we travel to Clearfield this Thursday,” said Kraft.
