Tyrone Tanks the Titans

The Tyrone boys competed a varsity sweep of the Tussey Mountain Titans on Saturday night at home

The Tyrone boys only meet up with Tussey Mountain on the hardwood once a year but it’s always an electrifying game. And this past Saturday was just that. The Eagles put on a show with a dominant scoring campaign, winning 68-39.

The game was the second half of a varsity doubleheader at home.  The Lady Eagles made easy work of the Titans in the opener, winning 70-41.

I thought we played extremely well today, we played very well man to man defense and came away with the win

— Head Coach George Gripp

The boys picked up where the girls left off, jumping out to a commanding 21-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Eagles were just too much for the Titans to stop.

“I thought we played extremely well today, we played very well man to man defense and came away with the win, said Head Coach George Gripp.

Tyrone featured a balanced scoring attack with 10 of Tyrone’s 12  players scoring against Tussey.

Tyrone big man Anthony Politza recorded a double-double and led all scorers with nine buckets, for 19 total points. Two other Tyrone players reached double-digits as Parker Mitchell netted 11, and Jake Meredith added 10.

“As a team we dominated on the boards which led to easy buckets. Our shooters found their mark early and there was no looking back,” said Politza.

The Tyrone defense was a big part of the win on Saturday. Tussey can be very effective from outside but Tyrone shut down Tussey’s three guard shooting attack.

“We knew we had to play good defense against their guards, and we executed that. Defense was the motor of that game,” said point guard Jake Meredith.

Unlike their third quarter misstep versus Bellwood, the Eagles played four straight quarters with intensity for their second win of the season.

The 2-1 Eagles have a Mountain League conference game Wednesday, December 16th at Huntington. Tip-off is at 7:00pm.
