The Tyrone Area School District offers students at the high school the opportunity to fulfill their Physical Education requirement in the summer.

Because state graduation regulations require four credits of physical education to earn your high school diploma, students generally choose the summer gym option for one of two reasons: Some take the course in order to make their regular schedule in the fall more flexible; others do it to recover a phys. ed. credit lost due to a failing grade or medical circumstances so that they can still graduate on time.

I liked gym better in the summer because you had more time to play an actual game and you don’t have to change and go back to class

— Paige Umholtz

The course is taught by Tyrone phys. ed. teachers Thomas Coleman and Marcus Owens.

According to Coleman, summer gym is basically the same as a semester course of gym condensed into a three week period.

Students learn and play team sports, and individual fitness activities such as running/walking and swimming is required.

Students spend two hours each day in the course and must complete all activities.  Attendance is mandatory and students cannot pass summer gym with more than one absence.  Students who miss more than one class must make up the time in order to earn the credit.

Students who take summer gym generally found it to be a positive experience.

“I liked gym better in the summer because you had more time to play an actual game and you don’t have to change and go back to class,” said sophomore Paige Umholtz, who took gym last summer.

“You do everything you do in  regular gym year only condensed into three weeks.  You swim everyday and walk a mile on the track and play a team game or activity,” said sophomore Haley Wagner.
