Tyrone’s 1000 point basketball scorer and track champion Jordyn Swogger will take her next step in life and head to Lock Haven University, where she will major in health and physical education and compete for the Lady Eagle’s track and field team.

“I like Lock Haven because it’s a Division II school, so there will be a lot of competition to make me improve,” said Swogger.

“Also, it really isn’t that big of a school for being Division II. I really like the campus, and the team was very welcoming,” added Swogger.

While most Tyrone sports fans know Swogger as a basketball star, two years ago she realized that her greatest talent might be on the track.

Swogger first became interested in track because her sister ran.

“I knew it would help me get faster and stay in shape for basketball,” said Swogger.

“I’m definitely going to miss basketball a lot,” said Swogger, “I like basketball a lot more than track, but I just think it’d be a lot of work in college. I’ll probably play in summer leagues.”

In the past three seasons Swogger has conquered many of her track goals. Last year she was a two event champion at districts in the 400 meter dash and the 4 by 100 relay and competed at states in both events.

“I don’t feel like I’ve gotten a lot of attention from track. I just worked really hard to reach my potential and be the best I can be,” said Swogger.

In college Swogger expects to specialize in sprints.

“I will be running the 200 and 100 meter dash. Possibly relays or the heptathlon depending on what my coach says,” said Swogger.

But before college, Swogger has a few goals left to achieve in her high school track career.

“I hope to make it in the top eight at states for the 400 meter dash. I also hope to be a district champion in the 200 and 400 meter dash, and 4 by 100 and 4 by 400 relays,” said Swogger.

Swogger will take the next step toward realizing those goals at the district track and field championship on Tuesday, May 13 at Mansion Park in Altoona.
