The Tyrone High School Quiz Team League recently finished their 2014 season with a record of 2-11.

The Bedford / Blair Scholastic Quiz League began in the fall of 2006. All public and non-public high schools in the counties are eligible to field teams of up to seven students.

Tyrone’s team of four juniors and four seniors traveled to the Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 building in Altoona to compete against teams from across Blair and Bedford counties.

“Although our record doesn’t show it, we were competitive in every match. It was great to be a part of the Altoona victory,” said Quiz League coach and TAHS chemistry teacher Mike Funicelli.

According to IU8, each of the fourteen teams attends the six regular season meets held in the fall.

Mark Lewis, captain, led the team to victory against Hyndman and Altoona.

“Quiz Bowl was a fantastic experience for me. It is truly a blessing to be able to compete both at the athletic and the academic levels,” said Lewis.

After the final match, the team landed in 13th place with their 2-11 record.

Not only was Lewis the official captain, he also was the highest scoring member of the team. His number of questions answered was closely trailed by seniors Jake Makdad and Connor Stroud.

“It’s definitely challenging! There is a ton of knowledge floating around in a small room,” said Makdad

The team is very proud of their season and is looking forward to next year.

“I look forward to next year and the fresh-faces. We will be holding tryouts for next years team,” said Funicelli.

The 2014 Quiz League team included: Mark Lewis, Jake Makdad, Connor Stroud, Arianna Scheidell, Anthony Politza, Kendra Walker, Gina Gavazzi, and Mary Beth Raabe.  The team was coached by chemistry teacher, Mr. Funicelli.
