Promposals 2015: The Complete List

April 29, 2015

Promposals are a new trend that has just hit Tyrone High School. Asking your date to prom is now expected to be a big gesture complete with balloons, signs, humor or anything creative.

All voting will occur on May 1st, 2015 at all lunches.

The winning promposal couple will receive their prom flowers courtesy of Alice’s Flower Garden!

Week 1: Bry and Haley

Week 1: Bry and Haley

Senior Bry Taylor incorporated all of these things in his promposal for his girlfriend, sophomore Haley Wagner.

Taylor filled Wagner’s bedroom with balloons when she wasn’t home and made a sign saying “The luckiest guy I will be… if you say yes to prom with me.”

“I sat down and thought about it, and I wanted to do something awesome,” said Taylor.

He got help from Wagner’s mom and her sister Payton.

Taylor and Wagner have been a couple for about a year but Taylor was still nervous to prompose, since he has never done one before.

Wagner was very surprised by the promposal.

“I knew that he would ask me eventually, but I had no idea how or when. When I walked into my room after dance practice, I was so excited!” said Wagner, who of course, said “yes.”

Both Taylor and Wagner are excited to go to prom together and spend time with their friends.

Over the next several weeks will be sharing more of this year’s most creative “promposals” at Tyrone High School.  When we’re done, students will have an opportunity to vote on their favorite promposals of the year.

Week 1: Sean and Jenna

Jenna Chronister

Junior Sean McGovern’s promposal to sophomore Jenna Chronister

Week 1: Sean and Jenna

Junior Sean McGovern didn’t have to think too hard to find a way to ask his date to the prom in a very special, personal way.

Sean buys Starbucks drinks at Sheetz for sophomore Jenna Chronister all the time, so he knew that planting his “promposal” in a Starbucks drink would be a great way to ask her to prom.

Jenna was expecting Sean to ask her to prom, but she was still surprised by how he did it.

“At first I didn’t even open the bottle he gave me, but he kept telling me to do it.  I was confused at first but after I did I was like, oh, yeah!” said Chronister.

She accepted Sean’s “promposal” right away.

“Originally I had the idea of giving her a bottle of Snapple with the promposal in the cap and asking her what’s the ‘Snapple fact’? But since I always buy her Starbucks drinks at Sheetz, I figured that was the way to go,” said McGovern.

Sean and Jenna are definitely excited to be going to prom together.

“She is very pretty, and we’re great friends,” said McGovern.

“I’m excited to get all dressed up and get my hair and makeup done,” said Chronister.

Week 2: Johnny and Gabby

Although they say chivalry is dead, 2014 Tyrone graduate Johnny Payne didn’t think so when he “promposed” to senior and longtime girlfriend Gabby Whetstine in a classically romantic way.

“It is my right as the man of the relationship to ask my girlfriend to prom whether I’m in high school or not,” said Payne.

Johnny promposed to Gabby with the help of his best friend, Noah Tepsic, the girls and teachers at the local dance studio, Dance Fusion, where Gabby takes classes.

Johnny spelled out “Prom?” in candles on the dance studio floor and surprised Gabby as “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeren played in the background.

“I was very surprised because Johnny is not usually romantic, and I didn’t know he was home from college,” said Whetstine.

Johnny came up with the idea with the help of Dance Fusion owner, Lindsay Pullara. He wasn’t nervous to prompose since the couple has been together for so long.

Gabby knew she would say “yes” immediately but was still surprised by Johnny’s romantic gesture.

The couple is looking forward to spending another year at prom together. Johnny is most excited to drive Gabby in her mom’s car, and Gabby can’t wait to get all dressed up

Week 2: Dallas and Marin

Week 2: Dallas and Marin

Senior Marin Grabill received an over the top promposal from senior Dallas Huff from our neighboring rival Bellwood.

At first, Marin was tricked into believing that her best friend Jordyn Greene and her were going out for ice cream.

But Jordyn took a “wrong turn” and ended up on a dead end road with Dallas waiting there.

“I thought he was going to ask someone from ‘Smellwood’ but I’m glad he [asked me].” said Grabill, “Him wearing a suit definitely influenced my answer.”

Dallas was able to make this “perfect” promposal once he figured out what she enjoys doing the most.

“Since she’s a majorette, I sort of went off that with the sign, and what girl doesn’t love flowers and balloons?” said Huff.

He was very nervous to ask Marin due to the planning that went in to it. He really wanted it to be perfect because he really likes her.

Marin was at a loss for words when she saw Dallas at the end of the street, because she had thought Jordyn and her were just going out for ice cream.

Marin and Dallas are most excited to have fun at prom and to make memories that will last for a lifetime.

Week 3: Pooky and Finnley

Week 3: Pooky and Finnley

Tyrone sports enthusiasts have being watching them run down the basketball court all season long, now they’re running to prom.

Senior Nathaniel “Pooky” Soellner promposed to his long time girlfriend junior Finnley Christine in a “cheesy” way.

Pooky wrote, “I know this is cheesy, but would you go to prom with me?” on a mac ‘n’ cheese box, which happens to be Finnley’s favorite food.

Pooky wasn’t nervous at all because he knew Finnley would love it. Since he asked her to prom last year, this year he knew she would say yes.

“She’s my girl!” said Soellner, “We had fun last year and I know we’ll have fun this year too.”

Finnley was sure Pooky was going to ask her, she just had no idea how. She knew she was going to say yes ask soon as she saw it.

“Pooky is the only person I would ever want to go to prom with,” said Christine.

Both Pooky and Finnley are looking forward to spending time together at their second prom.

“I am excited to have fun, get dressed up, and make Pooky’s senior prom as fun as possible,” said Christine. Pooky has similar feelings.

“I am excited to be with Finn and see her in her dress. I can’t wait to have a blast!” said Soellner.

Week 3: AJ and Marlena

Week 3: AJ and Marlena

Lunch in the cafeteria can be pretty boring sometimes, but junior Marlena Wagner spiced things up a little bit with her promposal. With the help of dean of students Luke Rhoades, Marlena was able to have the mic and present her promposal to sophomore Aj Grassi.

“Well, I wanted to do it in a big romantic gesture,” said Wagner, “and this was the best thing I could think of.”

Marlena got help from her friends Gina, Anslee, Austin, and Azia, due to how nervous she was.

AJ was very surprised, but he knew right away that he would say yes!

“Of course I knew I would say yes,” said Grassi, “Who wouldn’t say yes if Marlena Wagner asked you to prom?”

She asked AJ because he will be really fun, and, according to Marlena, he’ll also look good in a tux.

AJ and Marlena are looking forward to spending time together at prom, and have a bunch of fun.

Week 4: Collin and Carrie

Week 4: Collin and Carrie

Junior Collin Rhoades was able to prompose to his long time girlfriend senior Carrie Vance with a “play on words.”

Collin made a poster that said, “It would be killer if you were my prom date. Whale you be?” He was able to come up with the idea because he knows that Carrie loves whales and word play.

Collin knew that Carrie would say yes as soon as she saw it, but he just really wanted her to like it.

“I asked Carrie to prom because she is very special to me,” said Rhoades, “I wouldn’t want to go with anyone else.”

When Collin promposed, Carrie was so surprised. Because they are already dating, Carrie wasn’t expecting a formal invitation.

Carrie knew she would say yes right away because they went to prom together last year and she had a really fun time with him.

Collin and Carrie are both excited to spend time with their friends and each other at their second prom.

“I am excited to spend the evening dancing with my friends and getting all dressed up,” said Vance.

“I am excited to spend my second prom night with Carrie Vance,” said Rhoades.

Week 4: Will and Sarah

Week 4: Will and Sarah

Every girl dreams of being treated like a princess. Junior Sarah Isenberg was treated like royalty during her promposal from junior Will Lash.

Will used a My Princess ring to prompose to his longtime girlfriend at dinner.

“I put a lot of time and planning into the event. I was confident that she would appreciate it,” said Lash.

Will came up with the idea by himself, other than making sure everybody else thought Sarah would like it!

Will wasn’t nervous to ask Sarah, and he knew that she would be the only girl he would take to prom.

Sarah knew he would ask her to prom, but she was shocked when he did it at dinner. She immediately knew that she would say yes.

“We are excited to see each other dressed up so nicely on a special occasion and just have a great time dancing and hanging out together,” said Isenberg.

Week 4: Shane and Azia

Week 4: Shane and Azia

Some people say a picture is worth a thousand words. Senior Shane Geis used several pictures when he promposed to his girlfriend sophomore Azia Barnett.

“I was driving home and thinking about what girls really like, and I thought of sentimental things such as pictures as my idea,” said Geis.

Shane wasn’t nervous to ask Azia, because she knew he would say yes, he was just hoping that she would like it.

Shane got some help from his mom, and he really wanted his promposal to be perfect because Azia means a lot to him, and he wouldn’t want to spend his senior prom with anyone else.

Azia wasn’t surprised by the fact that Shane asked her to prom, because they have been talking about going to prom together for a while now. She was just shocked by how he asked her.

“Of course I knew that I would say yes,” said Barnett, “Shane is the only guy I would want to go with, and I know we will have a blast.”

Both Azia and Shane are excited to spend time with each other and their friends.

Week 5: Grayson and Mary Beth

Week 5: Grayson and Mary Beth

Junior Mary Beth Raabe didn’t have to look very hard when coming up with her sport-inspired promposal.

Freshman Grayson Putt has always been involved in track and a so-called “sneakerhead” so Mary Beth used these interests in her promposal.

“I thought the idea was really cool. I used to be really into sneakers so I thought it was neat,” said Putt.

Mary Beth was very nervous to prompose because she has never done it before. Also, Grayson was walking to the track, where the promposal was being set up, much earlier than she was expecting, making it extremely nerve wracking.

“I had changed the plan at least three times before I had finally settled on my poster. I wanted to incorporate his love for track and my love for dance all in one,” said Raabe.

Grayson was not expecting the promposal at all, but he knew he would say yes when he saw it.

Both Mary Beth and Grayson are looking forward to spending their first prom together and having fun.

Week 5: Jake and Megann

Week 5: Jake and Megann

One student at Tyrone High really took his education into consideration when promposing.

Senior Jake Makdad calculated his promposal to senior Megann Koegler very carefully. He used derivatives, like the ones in Calculus class, in an unconventional way to ask Megann.

“I was solving for f(x) and thought ‘derive’ sounds a whole lot like ‘drive’, so i came up with a pun and went from there,” said Makdad.

Jake wasn’t nervous to ask Megann because they are great friends and he knows they will have a memorable senior prom together.

Megann was extremely surprised by this mathematical gesture. She had no idea Jake was

asking her to prom, but she knew right away that she would say yes.

“How could you say no to Jake’s face?” said Koegler.

Both Jake and Megann are excited to make their senior prom the most memorable one yet.

Week 5: Conner and Naomi

Week 5: Conner and Naomi

One senior relied on many of his friends to pull off his “post-it” note promposal. Conner Stroud had help from Michaela Diehl, Jake Makdad, Olivia Dickson, Kendra Walker, Courtney Kurtz, Miss Kline, and many other people.

Conner claims that he tried to find the most embarrassing way to ask his friend, senior Naomi Walk, to prom.

He wasn’t nervous to ask, since they had already decided to go to prom together and are great friends.

“Obviously, she is very pretty and we always have lots of fun together, so it just made sense,” said Stroud.

Naomi knew they were going to prom together, but she was blindsided by his extravagant promposal.

“Of course I knew I would say yes to him! He is one of my best friends,” said Walk.

Conner and Naomi are looking forward to having a good time with their friends at prom.

Week 6: Anthony and Alli

Week 6: Anthony and Alli

One TAHS junior had many reasons to take his girlfriend to prom.

Junior Anthony Politza asked sophomore Allison Hosko to his prom with seven signs, one for each reason he was asking her.

Anthony originally found the idea for the “7 reasons” somewhere online, but he individualized them and came up with his own reasons himself.

He got help from Allison’s dad while hanging up the signs outside of their house. He also has to attribute some of the sign decorating to his mom.

“I’ve been dating Alli for nearly two years. I can’t imagine going to prom with anybody else,” said Politza.

Allison was so surprised when she pulled into her driveway and saw the promposal. She began to cry because she was so happy!

“I knew I would say yes right away. He is not only my boyfriend but my best friend, and I wouldn’t want to go with anybody else,” said Hosko.

Anthony and Allison are excited to hang out with their friends and one another, and to get all dressed up.

Week 6: Dakota and Kali

Week 6: Dakota and Kali

Senior Dakota Cowfer decided to use many romantic gestures when he asked his long time best friend senior Kali Lingenfelter to prom.

Dakota made a fancy poster saying “I know this sounds corky, but will you go to prom with me?” He also used candles, had romantic music playing, and gave her a bottle of sparkling cider.

“I knew Kali would like an elegant proposal,” said Cowfer, “So I incorporated many different items into my gesture.”

Dakota wasn’t nervous to ask Kali to prom, because they went together last year. He was mainly nervous about setting it up without her catching on to what he was doing.

“I asked Kali to prom, because she is gorgeous and one of my best friends, and I know if anyone is going to go all out for prom, it would be Kali,” said Cowfer.

Kali wasn’t surprised that Dakota asked her to prom because she knew they wanted to go together again this year.

Dakota and Kali are both excited to dress up for the grand march, and for the trip to McDonald’s after prom.

Week 6: Nick and Jordyn

Week 6: Nick and Jordyn

The newest footwear fashion has swept TAHS and promposals. Senior Nick Getz promposed to his long time girlfriend TAHS 2014 grad Jordyn Swogger with a brand new pair of Timberland boots.

Nick knew Jordyn wanted the pair of maroon colored boots, so he incorporated them into his promposal.

He came up with the idea on his own and was a little nervous to ask.

In the shoe box, he wrote,” “Let’s BOOT prom off and have a great TIMe?”

Jordyn was excited to see the shoes and knew she would say yes after seeing them.

“I was surprised because I didn’t think I was good enough for his large muscles,” said Swogger.

Both Nick and Jordyn are excited for prom and the after party.

Week 7: Tristan and Ashley

Week 7: Tristan and Ashley

Senior Tristan Lingafelt took advantage of the Easter holiday for a “egg-hunt promposal” for his girlfriend, Altoona Area High School senior Ashley Muffie.

Tristan’s promposal started out as a traditional Easter egg scavenger hunt, with 15 clues hidden in plastic eggs.  The last clue led to a Reese’s peanut butter egg with “Prom?” written inside.

Tristan was nervous to ask Ashley to prom, since he came up with the promposal idea himself.  “I knew there wasn’t anybody else I would ask to prom,” said Lingafelt.

Ashley was surprised about the promposal, because she didn’t think Tristan would do something like that.

Although Ashley was not planning on going to prom, she changed her mind when Tristan promposed.

The couple is looking forward to the prom and spending time together.

Week 7: Duane and Makenzie

Duane Boone

Week 7: Duane and Makenzie

Senior Duane Boone is looking forward to “hurdling to prom” with his girlfriend junior Makenzie Stauffer.

Duane used hurdles to spell out “prom” and surprise Makenzie with a promposal before track practice.

He recently began hurdling and Makenzie has been hurdling since middle school, so it was obvious what to do. He was nervous to ask her to the prom but had help from many people, including, Courtney Kurtz, Grace McKernan, Mark Lewis, Connor Stroud, Cullen Raf, Diddy Mitchell, Jeff McNelis, and Sean Isenberg.

Makenzie was surprised by the track-inspired promposal.

“I knew i would say yes. How could I have said no?” said Stauffer.

Duane and Makenzie are excited for their pre-prom date at Pizza Hut. “They have a really good ten dollar box,” said Boone.

Week 7: Andrew and Abbey

Week 7: Andrew and Abbey

Sometimes it’s the little things in life that mean the most. Senior Andrew Bell-Bigelow kept this in mind when he promposed to senior Abbey Gunter.

Andrew knew that Abbey loves toads, so he promposed with a stuffed toad with a sign saying, “Will you toad-ally go to prom with me?”

Andrew was not nervous about asking Abbey since he knew that she finds toads so cute.

Abbey knew that she would be going to prom together, but the promposal was still a surprise.

“I wasn’t surprised that he asked me…it was just the timing of it that surprised me,” said Gunter.

The couple is excited to spend the whole day together and is looking forward to a fun time.

Week 8: Tommy and Laura

courtesy of Laura Gunter

Week 8: Tommy and Laura

Senior Tommy Williams was able to incorporate some of his girlfriend’s favorite things, like monkeys and flowers.

Tommy asked his long time girlfriend freshman Laura Gunter to prom with a note saying “enough with the monkey business…would you go to prom with me?”

Tommy was very nervous to ask Laura because he wasn’t sure what she would think about it. He had a very easy time coming up with this idea, because he knew all of Laura’s favorite things.

Laura knew she would say yes, because Tommy is her boyfriend and she already knew that they would go together.

Both Tommy and Laura are excited to have fun and spend time together at prom.

Week 8: Kalea and Emily

Anna Baran

Kalea Hammond, Emily Hamer, and the Lady Eagles softball team with Kalea’s promposal.

Week 8: Kalea and Emily

One junior at TAHS decided to skip the “date” and take a friend to prom instead. Junior Kalea Hammond asked her close friend, freshman Emily Hamer to prom.

Kalea decided to incorporate softballs into her promposal since she plays softball with Emily. Kalea got a lot of help from her teammates to spell out “prom?” with softballs and to distract Emily until they were done.

“I was very surprised,” said Hamer, “Considering that I am a freshman I never thought I would be asked to prom my first year of high school by one of my best friends.”

Kalea was very nervous to ask Emily because it was April Fools Day and she figured that Emily would think it was a joke.

Both Kalea and Emily are excited to spend time with their friends and experience their first prom together.

Week 8: Bailey and Sam

Samantha Aungst

Sam Aungst and 2014 Tyrone Grad Bailey Christine and their promposal

Week 8: Bailey and Sam

Just because some TAHS students’ prom dates have graduated hasn’t stopped them from their promposals. Senior Sam Aungst asked TAHS grad Bailey Christine to her senior prom using a Valentine’s Day surprise.

Sam had hidden a note asking Bailey to prom at the bottom of a bucket full of his favorite candy, Reese’s peanut butter cups, which she gave him for Valentine’s Day.  Unfortunately, Bailey did not notice the note in the bottom of the container and he went back to college oblivious of the promposal.

Luckily, Sam’s friend, Olivia Dickson, took matters into her own hands and posted on Bailey’s Facebook wall telling him to look at the bottom of his bucket. “Bailey and I both thought that this was the funniest part of me asking him,” said Aungst.

Sam was nervous to see Bailey’s reaction to the promposal. She had a good idea that he would say yes, but the waiting was extremely nerve-wracking.

Bailey was very surprised that Sam asked him to prom, since it is unusual for the girl to ask a date, but it was still a good surprise. However if it weren’t for Olivia’s “subtle” hint on Facebook, he wouldn’t have found the promposal.

Sam and Bailey are looking forward to spending prom together, since they are close friends, and enjoying every moment of the day.
