Movie Review: City of Bones

Movie Review: City of Bones

The New York Times bestseller City of Bones  has been adapted into a movie, and hit the big screens on August 21st. To date, it has grossed $50 million worldwide, and rumors are going around about a sequel. However, many reviews have been quite negative.

Recently I went to see it, ready for possible disappointment, as book-to-movie adaptions are often hit or miss.

I am glad to report that this was definitely a hit.

The quality of the action sequences was truly unparalleled, and the fast pace of the story had the audience’s attention throughout the entirety of the movie.

Critics may say that it “borrows ingredients from seemingly every franchise,” but I would argue that the combination of several different myths and stories brings a fresh take to the world of the supernatural.

That’s not to say, however, that when Cassandra Clare wrote it she didn’t incorporate ideas from her own imagination. If runes and Shadowhunters – half-human, half-angels, or nephilim – are “borrowed,” just where did they come from, Rotten Tomatoes?

Although I can only speak for myself when I say I heartily enjoyed this movie, the evidence that others did as well cannot be argued. Many people have seen it multiple times, and I would like to myself.

In short, the media seems to be actively looking for another franchise to label “the next twilight” or “borrowed,” but storytellers keep adding their own twist to the mosh pit that is the Paranormal Romance genre.
