Lady Eagles Weather Fierce Dragon Comeback

The Lady Dragons rallied from a 14 point deficit but failed to convert a last second free throw.

Golden Eagle fans know that it’s going to be an intense game when the Central Dragons roll into town. Friday nights’ girls game was no exception.

Tyrone jumped out to an early lead but had to beat back a fierce comeback by the Lady Dragons.  With time expired and a two point Golden Eagle lead, the fate of the game laid in the hands of Central’s Tierney Fernandes.

We got out of control after we got the 14-point lead. We’ve got to improve on that, get a little smarter

— Head Coach Luke Rhoades

Fernandes was fouled at the buzzer and had two shots to send the game to overtime. She converted the first but failed to hit the second, giving the Lady Eagles their second win of the season.

Tyrone came out of the gates fast and lead 22-18 at the half after Senior Kasey Engle drilled a three pointer as time expired.

The Lady Eagles pulled ahead by 14 points after the third quarter but that was when the Dragons started to roar. The Dragons closed the gap to just two points then each team traded buckets for the last three minutes.

“We got out of control after we got the 14-point lead,” Coach Luke Rhoades said of the Lady Eagles. “We’ve got to improve on that, get a little smarter.”

After a 10-point outburst from Central, the Lady Dragons pulled ahead 46-45 with 1:52 remaining. That’s when the senior Lexi Cannistraci came up in the clutch for 5-points. Central’s Hannah Johnston tied it at 50 a piece with 0:24 left. Kasey Engle got the ball drove down court, drew a foul, and sunk both from the line giving Tyrone a 52-50 lead.

“She’s great,” said Central’s Head Coach Rob Mock. “I told our girls she’s good and is going to score her points. And, Cannistraci has come a long way.”

Central only had 11 seconds to get down the floor and score, but managed to draw a shooting foul as time expired. Central’s Tiereny Fernandes converted the first but failed to hit the second to give Tyrone a classic victory over the Dragons once again.

This win improved the Lady Eagles’ record to (2-0).
