Golden Eagle Baseball Wins Backyard Brawl

Tyrone Picks up first win of season with strong team effort

After two tough losses to open the season against Central and Mount Union the Golden Eagles picked up their first win of the season against arch rival Bellwood last Saturday.

The Blue Devils struck first, scoring two runs in the very first inning but the Golden Eagles fought back with 2 runs of their own in the second inning.

In the third inning both teams scored runs. Tyrone however had 1 extra run making the score 4-3 after 3 innings of play.

I felt good pitching and I am proud that our team stepped up and got this win

— Starting pitcher Brian Gunter

The next two innings were scoreless because of great pitching by senior Brian Gunter and great defense by the entire Golden Eagle team.  Gunter pitched against a tough Bellwood lineup and kept the game low scoring. “I felt good pitching and I am proud that our team stepped up and got this win,” said Gunter.

Coming in to relieve Gunter with two outs in the sixth was senior Alex Weaver. Alex pitched to one batter, striking him out and ended the inning with the game tied 4-4.

The last inning was one to remember.  Tyrone had freshman Colson Lewis on third and 1 out. Senior Brett Robinson was up to the plate. Robinson ran to first on a dropped third strike which allowed freshman Colson Lewis to steal home, giving the Golden Eagles the lead. Robinson hustle play showed how bad the team wanted to win this game.

Even though Tyrone had the lead going into the bottom of the seventh Bellwood was at the top of there lineup. But Senior Alex Weaver was up to the challenge. The first batter grounded out and after a couple Bellwood hits, a strikeout, and an intentional walk the bases were loaded. The Bellwood batter hit a pop fly to the outfield and Senior Brett Robinson made the catch to give the Golden Eagles there first win of the season.

The Golden Eagles travel to Phillipsburg this Tuesday for a game at 4:30.
