The 2016 girls varsity softball team are inching closer and closer to their season. Despite an inexperienced team, they still have high goals set and are looking to have a winning record this season.

Last year Tyrone softball made huge strides under new head coach Peter Baran.  With one season under his belt, Coach Baran is looking to improve again this season.

I think we will be a stronger defensive team, and be more complete all around. My goal is to win more games than last year and hopefully make a playoff appearance

“I think we will be a stronger defensive team, and be more complete all around. My goal is to win more games than last year and hopefully make a playoff appearance,” Baran said.

The Lady Eagles have six returning letter winners: senior Anna Baran, Juniors Madi Grazier, Allison Hosko, and Hailey Durbin, and sophomores Grace Gensimore, and Emily Hamer.

Senior Anna Baran will be expected to lead the squad this season in every aspect on the field. The team will have big shoes to fill with senior catcher and infielder Finnley Christine out due to a recent ACL surgery.

Captain Anna Baran believes one of their many strengths will be the pitching lineup. With five pitchers and three catchers, the Lady Eagles should have many match ups to test teams with.

“Unlike last year, we have a deep pitching line up to hopefully be able to match with some of the best teams around,” Anna added.

Many of the girls attended the off-season clinics and conditioning camps which wasn’t the case in previous years. They have put in many hours to improve their game.

“We have a strong core of players and they all have tremendous attitudes,” said Baran.

The Lady Eagles will be challenged right out of the gate, with their first three games being against powerhouse opponents P-O, Central and Huntingdon.

The girls begin their season on March 29th when they host Philipsburg-Osceola.
