“Every setback is a setup for a comeback”; Lady Eagles fall to Bellwood 77-69 in 2OT

Lady Eagles receive first loss of the season as they fall 77-69 to Bellwood-Antis.

The Lady Blue Devils handed the Lady Eagles their first loss of the season Monday night in their annual rivalry breast cancer match-up.

Bellwood’s Karson Swogger was a dominant force, setting a new single game school record with a season high 42 points.

It hurts tonight, but tomorrow is a new day and we need to get back on track,

— Coach Luke Rhoades

“It stinks. Getting your first loss of the season from a team we knew we could beat is not a good feeling,” said senior Finnley Christine who scored all but 2 of her 11 points during the fourth quarter and overtime play, “We need to refocus and get ready for the toughest Mountain League match up of the season against Penns Valley on Wednesday,”

After the first quarter of play, Tyrone was up 14-11 but the scoring would balance out for both teams ending the half tied at 22.

The teams traded leads throughout regulation.  With seven seconds remaining in the game and Tyrone down by 2, Finnley Christine sunk two free throws to tie the game 55-55.

Bellwood then went down court for a layup by Damiano at the buzzer, but the shot was waved off, sending the game into it’s first overtime.

Both teams were capable of scoring 8 points each in the first overtime,  and Kasey Engle scored on a driving lay up with 18 seconds to tie it up at 63 sending the game into overtime #2.

With Cannistraci and Lehman fouled out and Engle and Christine both with four fouls, the Lady Eagles just couldn’t do the ‘little things’ to pull out the win. Bellwood’s Riley D’Angelo connected on a huge three pointer and a following layup to make it 71-65 with 2:09. Karson Swogger also drove to the basket giving the Blue Devils an eight-point advantage. Kasey Engle hit a three pointer with one minute left but Alanna Leidig and Swogger both scored 2 each to seal the win for theLady Blue Devils.

“It hurts tonight, but tomorrow is a new day and we need to get back on track,” Coach Rhaodes added.

Kasey Engle led the Lady Eagles with 27, while Cannistraci and Christine combined for 27 as well.

This might not be the end of the story for the Bellwood-Tyrone rivalry as it is possible that the two teams could meet again in the playoffs.

Until then, the Lady Eagles are back in action tonight as they travel to Penns Valley for a Mountain League matchup to take on the 9-4 Lady Rams.
