A varsity tennis team with four girls continues to be challenging. One match immediately forfeited leaves Tyrone automatically at a disadvantage.

Wagner stated, “We may be small, but we’re mighty.” That definitely showed in their match against Chestnut Ridge– who had a full roster with quite a few extra competitors.

A little after 3pm, the single matches started. Sweat rolled down Tina Hollen’s (Bellwood) face as she gained an easy victory against her competitor in the extreme heat of the day with 6,3 the first set and 6,1 the following set.

In a timely manner, Marlena Wagner obliterated her competitor winning straight sets (6,1).

Across the courts, Hannah Klesius and Erika Voyzey put up a fight in an attempt for an easy win for the team, but there was no such luck.

The score was 2-3 with Chestnut Ridge in the lead. It’s doubles or nothing.

Duo Hollen and Klesius started their double match immediately after the single matches to keep the intensity high.

It started off slowly with Tyrone winning a game and then Chestnut Ridge making a comeback. On the 5th game of the 8 game pro set, Hollen and Klesius turned it on. Skillful vollies at the net from Klesius and powerful hits at the back from Hollen placed the duo in the lead.

“We were patient with our shots, and it paid off” Hollen stated. Hollen and Klesius were victorious with a final score of 8,4.

Shortly after, Wagner and Voyzey began their double match. Chestnut Ridge stole the first game with flawless serves, but perfection only last so long. The dynamic duo made an impressive comeback with some tweaks in formation.

Towering at five foot eight, Voyzey intimidated Chestnut Ridge and Wagner realized the fear instantly. Taking charge, Wagner let Voyzey at the net. Each rally got shorter and shorter as Voyzey immediately smashed the ball down and Wagner cleaned up the back court with direct corner hits. The two girls celebrated giving racket high-fives when they won their 8 game pro set 8,4.

Tyrone went through an uphill struggle to a victory of 4-3 over Chestnut Ridge. The next home match is Tuesday, September 22.
