TYRONE – As Dr. William Miller, the current superintendent of Tyrone Area School District (TASD), steps down to retire at the end of the 2012-2013 school year, the hunt for Miller’s successor is on.
Miller succeeded his father, Norman Miller, as superintendent in 1970. This means that W. Miller has been the superintendent of TASD for over 40 years.
In an interview by the Altoona Mirror, W. Miller was asked how he lasted as long as superintendent.
“I guess it’s my commitment. Though I’ve never been divorced, when I do retire, I see this as a divorce. I consider it [job] my family. I have coffee here, go through email. I sometimes bring my dog in the office. I’m just comfortable being here, and I love the challenges. They’re always on my mind,” W. Miller said in an interview with the Mirror.
During that same interview, he stated that he has not put a time table on his retirement yet.
Adam Zook, a freshman at TASD, stated that a good superintendent should be fair and have a lot of experience in the school system. Zook commented that he would also like the new superintendent to be experienced and moderate.
On the homepage of TASD’s official website a survey has been put up for people living within the boundaries of TASD. The survey asks you to choose ten of the many characteristics listed that you believe a superintendent of a school district should have.
Although there is no known candidates to replace W. Miller—when asked who should replace W. Miller, Zook and Coy Focht, freshman at TASD, both said that Mrs. Melissa Russell is more than qualified for the job.
“[Russell] is experienced, she has been a teacher, she has been a dean of students and she has been a principal,” Zook said.
“She is nice, smart, and she has very good judgment,” Focht said.
