Senior Alexis Cannistraci took the next step in her athletic career this Monday morning, committing to play basketball for Penn State Altoona in the fall.

After growing up a Nittany Lion fan, it will be a new experience to be in the position of so many athletes she had once rooted for. For Cannistraci, Penn State Altoona will be home away from home. She’s very familiar with both the college and the team, as former Lady Eagle Basketball alums Finnley Christine and Nicole Gripp also play for the PSU Altoona Lions.  There are also several players on the squad that Cannistraci knows from the local AAU circuit.

“I can’t wait to get to play with Finnley and other girls on the team that I’ve gone up against before,” said Cannistraci.

After considering other schools like Pitt-Greensburg, Mount Aloysius, and Frostburg, Cannistraci ultimately decided Penn State Altoona was her best choice. Due to the closeness to home, their new kinesiology program, and familiarity with the team and coaches.

“I’m majoring in kinesiology and PSUA just got a new program for it so I can study all four years at PSUA,” said Cannistraci. “I also can’t wait to pair back up with some familiar players and coaches.”

Cannistaraci had quite the successful high school career contributing to four straight Mountain League Championships for the Lady Eagles. She also earned the Altoona Mirrors Athlete of the Week this year while averaging a double double. Basketball wasn’t her only skill as she also excelled for the Golden Eagles on the volleyball court and the track.

“Alexis is a great teammate and an even better friend. I can’t wait to see how she contributes,” said Tyrone alum Finnley Christine. “We are definitely excited to have her join the team, me especially!”
