Boys Soccer Lose 7-3 to Hollidayburg; Win 2-0 over P-O

Hollidaysburg 7, Tyrone 3

Tyrone Boys Varsity Soccer lost their opening match of the season 7-3 to much bigger AAAA Hollidaysburg squad on Tuesday, September 6.

Despite the loss Tyrone showed an impressive first half comeback but ultimately fell short during the second half.

“We played well, especially against a bigger school, we caught them by surprise when we adjusted our defense, and we took advantage of their mistakes,” said Tyrone Head Coach Nick Miller.

Hollidaysburg came out strong with two quick goals in the first 10 minutes of the game but Tyrone sophomore Andrew Pearson answered back with a goal of his own to make it 2-1.

The Tigers continued to play well in transition and rack up two more goals to make the score 4-1 with 15 minutes left in the first half.

Tyrone corrected some defensive issues midway through the  first half and were able to capitalize on Hollidaysburg’s mistakes by scoring two goals, both by freshman Corey Johnston.

The Eagles came out of the first half with some momentum but weren’t able to transfer that into the second. Hollidaysburg scored 3 more times to make the final score 7-3.

“I was really looking for the win, but we played well,” said freshman Corey Johnston.

On Wednesday the Eagles beat the Philipsburg Osceola Mounties with a 2-0 win in their home opener.

The first half went scoreless with both teams struggling to move the ball into the offensive zone.  Tyrone wasn’t able to control the ball well and the ball and lost the ball in the midfield multiple times.

In the second half Tyrone’s first scoring opportunity came on a penalty after Corey Johnston was fouled in the box. Midfielder Alex Schmoke took the penalty kick and put the shot on goal but philipsburg keeper was able to make the save.

Shortly after Tyrone sophomore Andrew Pearson was able to break through the defense and get an easy touch to send the ball past the keeper for Tyrone’s first goal of the night.

The highlight of the night came from junior Blake Johnston after a dazzling free kick that soared into the top left corner of the goal.
