Boys Basketball Dominates Phillipsburg 70-42

Tyrone was firing on all cylinders Monday at home against Phillipsburg. The boys controlled the game from the tip, and secured the victory 70-42.

“Big bangers everywhere,” said Jake Meredith about the boys win.

Big bangers it was.  Tyrone had four of its five starters in double digits. Dylan Thomas led all scorers with 17 points, Hunter Anderson had 14, and Parker Mitchell and Jacob Meredith added 12 apiece for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Phillipsburg has always lacked the skill to truly compete in the Mountain League, but in the past few seasons they have improved greatly. Tyrone wasn’t intimidated though. They performed well, bouncing back from a lackluster game against rival Bellwood.

We shot a high percentage, and I think that really helped us get ahead

— Hunter Anderson

It seemed as if the Golden Eagles were unstoppable. They were draining threes, getting to the rim with ease, and out-rebounding Phillipsburg by a large margin.

Junior Hunter Anderson also stood out in this game. His offensive versatility was utilized extremely well.

“We shot a high percentage, and I think that really helped us get ahead,” said Anderson.

Senior Alex Weaver stepped in as the fifth starter in the wake of senior Michael Lewis’ back injury. Weaver had a big impact down low, grabbed countless boards and finished with nine points.

“[Phillipsburg] had four guys in the gym the whole summer. They’ve improved greatly, and we needed to be ready for it,” said Coach Gripp of the much improved Mounties.

Phillipsburg had multiple shooters, but they were all contained by Tyrone’s press. Tyrone got several buckets off of Phillipsburg turnovers, and a big reason was because of their press.

For the opposition, Marcus Wisor led with 12 points for Philipsburg-Osceola who dropped to  0-2 overall, 0-1 in the Mountain League.

The Golden Eagles next game is Friday at Central and should be a competitive Mountain League match-up.
